Updates on the 2017 Subaru Forester

There are some subtle, but positive changes made to this year's Subaru. Park the 2016 and 2017 Subaru Forester models side-by-side and those with keen eyes will notice the differences. There are slight revisions to the fascias in both the front and rear, along with some interior upgrades. A few of these include a reshaped grille, revised wheels, and LED accents on the taillamps and headlamps. The list of active safety equipment has also been expanded for the 2017 model year.

While both the 2016 and 2017 Forester offered EyeSight, the version offered on the more recent model has been completely updated, providing even more features. In addition to existing forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control, the suite of safety features now includes rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot detection, and lane-keeping assist.

Subaru also makes a very useful update for the 2017 Forester in the way of Active Torque Vectoring, something that you will not see offered on any competitors. This new feature is offered on the Forester 2.0XT with its 250-horsepower turbocharged engine. The brake-based torque vectoring is borrowed from the WRX, as well as the WRX STI, which the Forester 2.0XT already shared its powertrain with.

Instead of operating through the differential, as with true torque vectoring, this version from Subaru is brake-based and can sub the interior of the front wheel as a way of minimizing understeer during cornering. It makes the 2017 Forester more maneuverable than previous years' models.

The Subaru Forester Through the Years

Subaru introduced the Forester to the American market in 1998 with its engine coming from the Legacy and sharing a platform with the Impreza. For 1999, the Subaru Forester got improved shifting and additional torque. There were slight exterior updates for 2001 that took a keen eye to notice and for 2002, Subaru added daytime running lights and a cargo area cover while updating the intermittent wipers. The 2003 Subaru Forester was heavily updated, including stylistic features and an updated chassis. The next major redesign was in 2009, with the most recent significant update for the 2014 model.
