2016 vs 2017 Subaru Outback: Changes to Notice

There are a reasonable number of updates for the 2017 Subaru Outback, making it well worth opting for this model year. There is a new top-of-the-line trim level, the Touring, designed for people who want the best that Subaru has to offer. It lets you choose from the engines and comes standard with chrome exterior trim, a dark gray grille, 18-inch wheels, and interior trim in woodgrain and piano black. Other included features include a heated steering wheel, navigation, 7-inch screen, STARLINK Safety Plus emergency communications, and SiriusXM satellite radio and traffic, which comes with a three-year subscription.

This model also comes standard with the EyeSight Driver Assist Technology package, which means that any 2017 Outback configured with this boasts more features than the 2016 model year. This technology now includes automatic high beams and reverse automatic braking, truly competitive safety features. People interested in the Limited trim will notice that the 2017 version adds push button start and a moonroof to the list of standard features.

Find Out the Outback's History

The Outback is an iconic vehicle with a rich history. If you trace the Subaru Outback to its first model, you will have to go back to 1995 when it debuted in the form of a premium trim level offered on the Legacy wagon. The year after, it started gaining some of its signature features, like the raised suspension.

The Outback officially became a separate model for 2000. It was available as a sedan or station wagon and was introduced with a 165-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive. The following year, Subaru added a new 3-liter horizontally-opposed 6-cylinder engine with 212 horsepower on certain trims.

The second generation of the Outback arrived in 2005 with revisions to the 3-liter engine that increased output. There was also a new 2.5-liter turbocharged engine, a new interior, and a completely revised exterior. The base engine got variable valve timing in 2005 to boost its output to 175 horses. The Outback sedan was dropped in 2008, with the third generation arriving in 2010 with more powerful engines, enhanced efficiency, and new styling.
