Forrester, Crosstrek, Outback… when you think of these iconic Subaru vehicles, you think of sunlit journeys and off-road adventures. And if Subaru’s recent activity is any indication, these off-road champions might soon be receiving some company.
This past week, as reported by AutoGuide, Subaru filed 12 new trademarks with the USPTO. Each patent was filed as an International Class 12 trademark covering “automobiles and structural parts and fittings therefor.” In plain terms, they’re all trademarks for vehicles: not software, not cabin accessories, but a dozen theoretical, all-new Subaru machines.
The 12 names Subaru has trademarked are as follows: Accomplice, Everguide, Everpass, Getaway, Highroad, Hightrail, Outsider, Tailwind, Trailhead, Trailseeker, Uncharted, and Viewfinder.
What could this mean for the Subaru fleet moving forward? At this point, all we can do is speculate. So, here at Subaru of Macon, we thought we’d do just that.
Welcome to the Jungle
Based on the patents, we know these 12 names are potential monikers for new models, trims, or concept cars. The question now is how many of these vehicles – if any – will actually come to fruition? Often, companies will trademark a multitude of names to give themselves options down the road. Do we believe Subaru will roll out both an Everguide and Everpass? A Trailhead and Trailseeker? Perhaps these pairs will be new trims in service to a particular model. Regardless, there’s redundancy at play that might just come down to maintaining flexibility.
What we do know is that all of these trademarked names share a conceptual spirit. They invoke wilderness, exploration, and outdoor adventuring. One would think vehicles named the Getaway and Viewfinder are champing at the bit to explore off-road terrain. Uncharted conjures images of the awe-inspiring off-trail vistas from the game series of the same name. And the Outsider… well, the Outsider’s a little on the nose.
If these turn out to be future trims, it could indicate that Subaru is looking to supplement or replace its current Wilderness editions, which are currently made for the Crosstrek, Outback, and Forester models.
And then there’s the ultimate wild card: the EV factor. As of now, the Solterra is the only electric vehicle in Subaru’s lineup. But Subaru has announced it will introduce three new electric vehicles to join the Solterra by 2026. Could one – or three – of these new trademarks be those electric vehicles? We’ve yet to see an off-road version of the Solterra, and with competitors continuing to invest in their fleets’ electrification, this could be the opportunity for Subaru to move in on the electric off-road market.
Joining the Party
Subaru is already a world leader in high-quality off-road crossovers and SUVs. If any of these new trademarks do see the light of day, they’d figure to slot comfortably into this established brand. What unique innovations each will bring to the table is still anyone’s guess.
For the time being, you can go rock crawling or hill climbing in the versatile 2024 Forester. With Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and the latest in navigational tech, this SUV is primed to take on weather and terrain of any magnitude. Plus, they’re built to last: 96% of Foresters sold in the last 10 years remain on the road today.
That’s an impressive figure… unless you’re the Crosstrek, which endures at a 97% rate over the same time frame. The Crosstrek can credit its longevity to the SUBARU BOXER® engine, as well as its unique, horizontal configuration. This subcompact SUV is geared up for a new adventure, and it can be yours today at New Motors Subaru.
Don’t Wait to Begin Your Subaru Adventure
So many questions remain as to what – if anything – will come out of this batch of trademarks. Could the Tailwind be a performance-focused off-roader? What sort of shenanigans would the Accomplice be accomplice to? And will this blog be doomed to mix up the Highroad and Hightrail for years to come?
All will be answered in due time. Right now, it’s time to seize today; there’s a whole world to explore, and it isn’t stopping to await Subaru’s next move. Don’t begin your next great adventure without making a pit stop at Subaru of Macon first. With our Service Center standing by to address all your Subaru maintenance needs, the only limit is your own imagination.
